The Fitbit Daily Readiness Score is a number between 1 and 100 that shows up each morning on your Fitbit device. It’s supposed to tell you whether your body is ready for a hard workout or needs recovery time.
Unlike a simple step count, the fitbit daily readiness score pulls together three different streams of data: heart rate variability, sleep quality, and recent activity levels. What the Daily Readiness Score measures
Fitbit’s algorithm looks at three main inputs every morning:
- Heart rate variability (HRV): The variation in time between heartbeats, measured while you sleep
- Sleep: Total sleep time, sleep stages, and overall sleep quality
- Recent activity: Your exercise load over the past few days compared to your normal baseline
Each factor gets weighted, and the system spits out a single score. A high score (above 65 or so) suggests you’re recovered and can handle intensity. A low score (below 30) means your body is still dealing with fatigue, stress, or poor sleep.
The score recalibrates over time as the app learns your personal patterns. What counts as “high HRV” for you might be different from someone else, so Fitbit compares your current readings to your own 30-day baseline.
How HRV affects your score
Heart rate variability is the biggest single factor in the Daily Readiness Score. When your nervous system is balanced and recovered, your HRV tends to be higher. When you’re stressed, sick, or overtrained, HRV drops.
Fitbit tracks HRV automatically during sleep using the optical heart rate sensor on your wrist. It looks at the RMSSD metric, which measures short-term variability between beats. The app then compares your last night’s HRV to your recent average.
A sharp drop in HRV usually lowers your readiness score. A higher-than-usual HRV bumps it up. This is why you might see a low score after a night of drinking, a stressful day, or when you’re fighting off a cold—even if you slept a full eight hours.
Sleep quality and quantity both matter
Sleep feeds into the readiness algorithm in two ways: how much you slept and how well you slept.
Fitbit tracks your time in light, deep, and REM sleep stages. If you spent more time in deep and REM sleep than usual, that boosts your score. If you tossed and turned all night or only got five hours, your score drops.
The app also looks at your sleep consistency. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time each day helps keep your score stable. Irregular sleep schedules confuse your circadian rhythm and can drag down readiness even if total sleep time looks okay.
One night of bad sleep won’t wreck your score if your HRV and activity load are fine. But a string of short or disrupted nights will push the number lower over time.
Recent activity load creates the third pillar
Your workout history over the past few days rounds out the score. Fitbit looks at how much activity you’ve done recently compared to your normal baseline.
If you ran a half-marathon yesterday or did three intense lifting sessions this week, your activity load is elevated. That signals to the algorithm that your body might need more recovery time, which lowers your readiness score.
On the flip side, if you’ve been mostly sedentary for several days, the score might stay high—but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should jump straight into a max-effort workout. The score reflects recovery status, not fitness level.
The activity component also considers active zone minutes, which are minutes spent in elevated heart rate zones. More active zone minutes mean more stress on your system, which factors into whether you’re ready for another hard session.
What to actually do with your score
Fitbit suggests three loose categories:
- High score (65-100): You’re likely recovered and can handle a challenging workout or busy day
- Medium score (30-64): You’re moderately recovered; consider a lighter workout or active recovery
- Low score (1-29): Your body needs rest; focus on sleep, easy movement, or a full rest day
These are guidelines, not rules. Some athletes ignore low scores and train anyway because their schedule demands it. Others treat the score as permission to take a guilt-free rest day.
The score works best when you track it over weeks or months and notice patterns. Does your score tank after late nights? Does it stay high even when you feel wiped? Those patterns tell you how well the algorithm matches your actual recovery.
