Frequently asked questions

What's a normal stress level? +
Acute stress (deadline, performance, exercise) is healthy and adaptive. The problem is chronic stress that never resolves — your body stays in "fight-or-flight," cortisol stays elevated, and HRV drops. A "normal" stress level cycles up and down throughout the day; a problematic pattern stays elevated even when you should be recovering.
Is stress the same as cortisol? +
Not exactly. Stress is the experience; cortisol is one of several hormones your body releases in response. Cortisol is the most useful biomarker because it tracks longer-term stress load, not just momentary spikes. Wearables like Apple Watch can't measure cortisol directly but can track its biometric correlates (HRV, sleep, recovery).
How accurate is a stress quiz vs. a wearable? +
Quizzes capture how you feel; wearables capture what your body is doing. The two often disagree — people who "feel fine" can have suppressed HRV and elevated resting heart rate, and vice versa. Continuous tracking catches the disconnect.
Can I lower my stress score without quitting my job? +
Yes. Most measurable cortisol reduction comes from sleep, breathing exercises, sunlight in the morning, and reducing alcohol — none of which require leaving your job. See /cortisol/lower for the evidence-ranked list.
