Does the Apple Watch Have a Stress Score?
The Apple Watch doesn't have a native apple watch stress score, but it tracks heart rate, HRV, and other metrics that third-party apps use to estimate stress.

If you’re looking for an apple watch stress score built into your device, you won’t find one. Unlike Fitbit or Garmin watches, Apple doesn’t include a native stress measurement or “body battery” feature. But that doesn’t mean your Apple Watch can’t track stress-related data.
Apple Watch collects several biometrics that relate to stress, and third-party apps use these measurements to estimate your stress levels. Here’s what your watch actually tracks, how apps turn that data into stress scores, and what you need to know about their accuracy.
What the Apple Watch Actually Tracks
Your Apple Watch monitors several metrics that change when you’re stressed:
- Heart rate: Continuous tracking throughout the day and night
- Heart rate variability (HRV): The variation in time between heartbeats, measured during sleep and rest
- Respiratory rate: Breaths per minute during sleep
- Blood oxygen: SpO2 levels (on Series 6 and newer)
- Activity and workouts: Movement patterns and exercise intensity
- Sleep data: Time asleep and sleep stages (on watchOS 9 and newer)
None of these individually equals a stress score. But when you combine them with smart algorithms, you can get a reasonable estimate of your stress state.

How Third-Party Apps Create Stress Scores
Since Apple doesn’t provide a built-in stress score, apps like Cortisol+, Welltory, and HRV4Training access the data Apple Watch collects through HealthKit. They then apply their own formulas to estimate stress.
Most stress-scoring apps focus heavily on HRV. When you’re relaxed, your HRV tends to be higher. When you’re stressed, anxious, or overtrained, HRV typically drops. Apps compare your current HRV to your personal baseline to flag when you might be under increased stress.
Some apps also consider:
- Resting heart rate changes (elevated RHR often signals stress or illness)
- Sleep quality and duration
- Activity levels and recovery time
- Time of day and context
The key difference between apps is how they weigh these factors and present the results. Some give you a single stress number. Others show trends over time or break stress into categories like “low,” “moderate,” and “high.”

Are These Stress Scores Accurate?
The accuracy of any apple watch stress score depends on the quality of the underlying data and the algorithm processing it.
Apple Watch heart rate and HRV measurements are reasonably accurate for wrist-worn devices. Research shows they’re close to chest-strap monitors for most people during rest, though they can be less reliable during intense movement or in people with darker skin tones or tattoos on their wrists.
But even with accurate biometric data, estimating stress is complicated. Your heart rate might spike because you’re stressed, or because you just climbed stairs. Your HRV might drop because of emotional stress, physical fatigue, dehydration, or poor sleep.
Good stress-tracking apps try to account for context. They learn your patterns over weeks and months, so they can tell the difference between normal variation and genuine stress signals. But no app is perfect.
Think of stress scores as one data point, not a diagnosis. If your score says you’re stressed and you feel fine, trust your body. If your score is low but you feel terrible, that’s also important information.
Why Apple Doesn’t Build This In
Apple has avoided creating a native stress score, likely for a few reasons:
First, “stress” is hard to define and harder to measure accurately. There’s no single biomarker that captures all types of stress—physical, emotional, acute, chronic.
Second, telling someone they’re stressed when they’re not (false positives) or missing real stress (false negatives) could cause problems. Apple tends to be conservative about health features.
Third, stress tracking requires context and personalization. What’s stressful for you might not be for someone else. Apps that specialize in stress can fine-tune their algorithms faster than Apple can update watchOS.
Apple may eventually add a stress feature. They’ve added sleep tracking, cycle tracking, and cardio fitness scores over time. But for now, stress measurement is left to third-party developers.
